Asakusa (浅草) e' a nord-est della citta' di Tokyo, facilmente raggiungibile con la Ginza Line e l'Asakusa Line.
La via principale di questo quartiere (dove troverete sicuramente dei ragazzi in abiti tradizionali disponibili a portarvi in giro in riscio') passa davanti alla Porta del Tuono (Kaminarimon 雷門 "Thunder Gate"), una porta alta 11,7 metri con la chōchin, una lanterna di carta rossa. Quattro statue la controllano: davanti, il Dio del vento e il Dio del tuono e altre 2 statue sono sul lato opposto della porta. Nakamise-Dori va dalla porta Kaminarimon al Sensōji temple (lunga circa 250 metri, con quasi 90 negozi) e attraversandola, vi ritroverete tra bancarelle di prodotti tipici. Arrivate poi alla Hōzōmon (la "porta della casa del tesoro"), che rappresenta l'ingresso vero e proprio del Sensō-ji (金龍山浅草寺 Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji), un complesso templare buddista, il piu' antico della citta', ed uno dei piu' importanti. Troverete un'imponente pagoda a cinque piani e il padiglione principale con la statua di Kannon.

Asakusa (浅草) is the center of Tokyo's shitamachi (literally "low city"), one of Tokyo's districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives.

La Porta del Tuono (Kaminarimon) (雷門 "Thunder Gate")

Asakusa's main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century. Kaminarimon is the first of two large entrance gates leading toSensoji Temple. First built more than 1000 years ago, it is the symbol of Asakusa. The temple is approached via the Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries.

Beyond the Hozomon Gate stands the temple's main hall and a five storied pagoda. Destroyed in the war, the buildings are relatively recent reconstructions. The Asakusa Shrine, built in the year 1649 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, stands only a few dozen meters to the left of the temple's main building.
