Il padiglione dorato del Kinkaku-ji si trova a Kyoto ed era in origine una villa chiamata Kitayama-dai (北山 第), appartenente a un potente statista, Saionji Kintsune. Successivamente venne acquistata dallo shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, nel 1397, quando divenne poi il complesso Kinkaku-ji. Alla morte di Yoshimitsu, l'edificio fu convertito in un tempio Zen da suo figlio.
Durante la guerra di Ōnin, tutti gli edifici del complesso tranne il padiglione furono bruciati, ma piu' grave fu l'incendio nel luglio del 1950 a causa di un monaco novizio, Hayashi Yoken.
L'attuale struttura del padiglione fu ricostruita nel 1955, e ristrutturato dal 1984 al 1987 (inclusa la doratura). Invece il tetto e' stato restaurato nel 2003.
Si circorda di uno stupendo parco (kaiyū-shiki 回遊式) e uno stagno, chiamato Kyōko-chi 鏡湖池 (Lago a specchio).

Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺 Temple of the Golden Pavilion) is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto.
The site of Kinkaku-ji was originally a villa called Kitayama-dai (北山第), belonging to a powerful statesman, Saionji Kintsune. Kinkaku-ji's history dates to 1397, when the villa was purchased from the Saionji family by shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and transformed into the Kinkaku-ji complex. When Yoshimitsu died the building was converted into a Zen temple by his son.
During the Ōnin war, all of the buildings in the complex aside from the pavilion were burned down.
On 2 July 1950, the pavilion was burned down by a novice monk, Hayashi Yoken.
The present pavilion structure dates from 1955, when it was rebuilt. In 1984 the coating of Japanese lacquer was found to be a little decayed and a new coating, as well as gilding with gold-leaf, much thicker than the original coatings, was completed in 1987.
Finally, the roof was restored in 2003. The name Kinkaku is derived from the gold leaf that the pavilion is covered in.
