Il 24 agosto e' il giorno della grande eruzione.
La data dell'eruzione del Vesuvio del 79 d.C. e' attestata da una lettera di Plinio il Giovane a Tacito. Nella variante universalmente ritenuta piu' attendibile del manoscritto, si legge nonum kal septembres cioe' 9 giorni prima delle Calende di settembre, data che corrisponde al 24 agosto.
La citta' di Pompei ai piedi fu sepolta da ceneri vulcaniche di circa 8 metri.

8月24日は、大噴火の日です。西暦79年8月24日に、イタリアのベスビオス火山が大噴火し、
麓のポンペイの市街が約8メートルの火山灰により埋没しました。
1738年に農夫がこの遺跡を発見し、発掘により当時の町の様子がそのままの形で出現しました。

24 August is Dai funka no hi! Dai Funka (大噴火, Dai Funka, literally meaning "Big/Great Eruption").
At noon on August 24, 79 A.D., the peak of Mount Vesuvius exploded, propelling a 10-mile mushroom cloud of ash and pumice into the stratosphere. For the next 12 hours, volcanic ash and a hail of pumice stones up to 3 inches in diameter showered Pompeii, forcing the city's occupants to flee in terror. Some 2,000 people stayed in Pompeii, holed up in cellars or stone structures, hoping to wait out the eruption.
