Indica il 31 dicembre, l'ultimo giorno dell'anno. Il giorno che precede 正月 shōgatsu, ovvero il Capodanno.
Prima del Capodanno e' usanza pulire l'intera casa, un rito chiamato 大掃除 ōsōji, "grandi pulizie", (susuharai significa "togliere la fuliggine") come per dire "lo sporco vecchio non ci sara' nel nuovo anno". Dopo si decorera' la casa con abbellimenti beneauguranti.
Durante la notte nei templi buddisti vengono fatte suonare le campane che annunciano il nuovo anno con 108 rintocchi (除夜の鐘 jōya no kane "scampanio dell'ultima notte dell'anno") .

12月31日は、大晦日(おおみそか)です。1年の終りの日です。
年越し蕎麦(としこしそば)を食べる習慣は江戸時代中期から始ったものです。
元々月末に蕎麦を食べる習慣があり、大晦日のみにその習慣が残りました。
除夜の鐘は108回撞かれます。眼・耳・鼻・舌・身・意の六根のそれぞれに苦楽・不苦・不楽があって18類、
この18類それぞれに浄・染があって36類、この36類を前世・今世・来世の三世に配当して108となり、
これは人間の煩悩の数を表すとされています。

Ōmisoka (大晦日), New Year's Eve, is the second-most important day in Japanese tradition because it is the final day of the old year and the eve of New Year's Day, which is the most important day of the year.
"Oosouji" is the name of a Japanese annual ritual; and means "the big cleaning". At the end of every year, usually on New Years Eve for many families, Japanese homes are meticulously cleaned in an effort to drive out any impure influences that may have taken up residence during the previous year. The timing is important: It's considered inauspicious to drag old business, clutter and dust into a brand-new year. Purification is the key objective here, the end result is something: I’m sure we all want and strive for.
Most Buddhist temples have a large cast bell that is struck once for each of the 108 earthly desires believed to cause human suffering.
