Il 12 gennaio e' スキーの日 Sukī no hi, la giornata sciistica. Perche' il 12/1/1911 a Takada (attuale citta' di Joetsu) nella prefettura di Niigata, il maggiore Theodor Edler von Lerch (specializzato nello sci ) diede il comando di mettere gli scii al suo gruppo di fanteria per la prima volta. Per questo Joetsu (Takada) venne definito il Luogo della nascita dello sci in Giappone.

1911年(明治44年)1月12日、新潟県の高田（現在の上越市)で、オーストリアのレルヒ少佐が、
日本で初めて高田陸軍歩兵連隊にスキー指導を行いました。
その日を記念して1月12日は「スキーの日」となっています。

12 January is スキーの日 Sukī no hi
12 January 1911, at the training ground of the 58th Infantry Regiment . Lerch, an officer who had specialised in skiing, gave the command to put on their skis: "Mettre ski!" Then followed the historic moment which decided Joetsu (then known as Takada) City's place as the birthplace of skiing in Japan.
