正月 Shōgatsu e' la festa tradizionale giapponese che celebra il nuovo anno (il capodanno),con caratteristiche e usanze tipiche della cultura nipponica. La vigilia è Ōmisoka (大晦日).
Alla mezzanotte del 31 dicembre, i templi buddisti suonano le campane per un totale di 108 rintocchi (じょやの鐘 joyanokane) a simboleggiare i 108 peccati originali nella fede buddista, in modo da allontanare i 108 desideri mondani racchiusi nei sentimenti di ogni cittadino giapponese.I giapponesi credono che il suono delle campane possa perdonare i loro peccati compiuti nel corso dell'anno precedente.

正月（しょうがつ）は、各暦の年初のことである。文化的には旧年が無事に終わった事と新年を祝う行事である。正月飾りをし、正月行事を行ったり御節料理を食べて、盛大に祝う。
日本では、1月1日の元日のみを国民の祝日としているが、実際には少なくとも3日までの三箇日は事実上の祝日と同じ状態となる。

The Japanese New Year (正月 Shōgatsu) is an annual festival.
At midnight on December 31, Buddhist temples all over Japan ring their bells a total of 108 times (除夜の鐘 joyanokane) to symbolize the 108 human sins in Buddhist belief, and to get rid of the 108 worldly desires regarding sense and feeling in every Japanese citizen. A major attraction is The Watched Night bell, in Tokyo. Japanese believe that the ringing of bells can rid their sins during the previous year. The bell is rung 107 times on 31st and once past midnight.
