12 settembre e' la "Giornata dello Spazio" (宇宙の日, Uchū no Hi), ricorrenza istituita per ricordare il primo astronauta giapponese nello spazio a bordo di uno Space Shuttle: Mamoru Mori (毛利衛, Mōri Mamoru), il 12 settembre 1992.

宇宙の日 科学技術庁(現在の文部科学省)と文部省宇宙科学研究所が1992(平成4)年に制定。日附は一般公募で決められました。1992(平成4)年、毛利衛さんがアメリカのスペースシャトル・エンデバーで宇宙へ飛びたった日です。

Uchu no Hi is Space Day. It was established by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Institute of Space and Astronautical Science to mark the day (September 12, 1992) that Mohri Mamoru boarded the Space Shuttle to become the first Japanese national in space.
