l'11 Maggio segna l'apertura dell' Ukai (鵜 飼) sul fiume Nagara (長 良 川) nella prefettura di Gifu (岐阜).
Di solito dura ogni notte dall'11 maggio al 15 ottobre eccetto le notti di luna piena!
L'Ukai ha una storia di circa 1300 anni, ed e' il metodo di pesca tradizionale per catturare Ayu (鮎) usando l'U (鵜), il cormorano addestrato (uccello della famiglia Phalacrocoracidae).
I pescatori addestrano i cormorani di eta' inferiore ai 2 anni per 15/20 anni.
Si posizionano 3 pescatori e 8/10 cormorani sono su ogni barca e usano una torcia infuocata per illuminare le loro operazioni e per attirare verso la barca i pesci che i cormorani dovranno catturare.
Viene legato un laccio vicino alla base della gola dell'uccello per impedir loro di ingoiare pesci piu' grandi e trattenerli in gola. Una volta preso il pesce, il cormorano viene riportato sulla barca per sputare il pesce

鵜飼開き
岐阜県の伝統文化、長良川の「鵜飼開き」は毎年5月11日に行われる。鵜飼は鵜匠が鵜をあやつって魚を捉える漁法で、1300年の歴史を持つ。この日から10月15日まで、中秋の名月と増水時を除く毎夜に行われ、開幕日には太鼓演奏や花火の打ち上げのなか、遊覧船も漕ぎ出される。

長良川鵜飼開き（Nagaragawa ukai biraki）
Ukai (鵜飼), the cormorant fishing at the Nagara River (長良川) in Gifu (岐阜) opens on May 11 every year. It has about 1300 years history and is the traditional fishing way to catch ayu (鮎) using the trained u (鵜), cormorant.
It will last every night from May 11 to October 15 except the full moon nights.
The fishermen train the cormorants of younger than 2 years old and keep them for 15 to 20 years. To control the birds, the fishermen tie a snare near the base of the bird's throat to prevent the birds from swallowing larger fish, which are held in their throat. Fishermen put the bonfire at the bow of the boat, and ayu are attracted to the light. When a cormorant caught a fish in its throat, the fisherman brings the bird back to the boat and has the bird spit the fish.
